World Cup 2006 News

This is a short one. I just adapted the World Cup Winner poll as Germany dropped out we´re now down to three teams that might win on Sunday. This evening either France or Portugal will drop out as well. Please give your opinion and thanks to everyone who already did. Cheers.

Today´s the day of the second semi-final. We have France playing Portugal in Munich at 9pm MET. I like both teams equally so may be tonight I won´t be that close to a heart attack like yesterday. Although I really hope “Zizou” will give such a shining performance as in the quarter-final against Brazil. It´s just a pleasure to watch him do what he is known to be best in. Read more

Remember Mr. 3 yellow cards in one game? Yeah you do. Graham Poll was the one with this little mishap. It does sound funny but the football governing body considers to allow a player to get 3 yellow cards before being banned in future World Cups. So far two yellow cards and you´re banned from the next game you know the stuff. Read more

A whole nation was crying out loud “Zidane président” again which means Zidane for president. The last time we significantly heard that was in summer 1998 when a 26-year-old Zinedine Zidane just scored 2 goals against Brazil in the World Cup final in France. Yesterday in the evening we kinda got this feeling again as “Zizou” scored the decisive 1-0 by penalty shot against Portugal. It´s the perfect story. He will play his last match on Sunday. But this last match can´t be compared to other players last games it´s the World Cup final just as the best player of all time deserves it. Read more

It could be the perfect story. Zinedine Zidane could win the World Cup once again on Sunday. The World Cup Final is his last game as well and he is now even nominated for Golden Ball which simbolizes the best player of the tournament. Ok, I´d have to this doesn´t surprise me at all. The last games of France´s veteran were outstanding therefore I´m convinced he will crown his glorious career. Read more

Before the World Cup 2002´s Golden Ball winner Oliver Kahn lost his spot as Germany´s #1 goalkeeper to Jens Lehmann. Jürgen Klinsmann will let him play once again tomorrow in Germany´s match for the 3rd place of the World Cup to thank him for supporting the team mentally. In my opinion this is a great gesture which shows once again that Klinsmann is the right man for this job. I really hope he´ll stay after the World Cup.

Germany´s Lukas Podolski has been named Best young Player of the World Cup. The 20-year-old Podolski has scored three goals in six matches so far and is quoted over at the BBC as follows:

I would have liked to have taken home the World Cup - but this is a great honour and is a great motivation to become more successful.

Tough call. Considered that there were others in the competition who might have deserved it as well. Fabregas is only one name. Podolski has been chosen in favor of Portugal´s C. Ronaldo because the portuguese winger was tending to act a little theatralic.

This year´s squad of the World Cup has just been announced. Some names that are occuring sound a little strange in my ears but ok I´m not an “expert”. I can´t possible think of any reason why Luca Toni and Francesco Totti are in the squad of the tournament. Both are obviously not fit. Toni has scored twice if I remember correctly. So I don´t understand it. Therefore I will name my own squad in one of the next posts but here we go with the “official” one. Read more

Well, we´re down to only two games. The World Cup is almost over. Oh my it feels like yesterday that it started. Ok, back to business. Germany is playing against Portugal and I slightly disagree with others saying this game is or will be boring. The team that wins will be remembered as the third place, this is something. Wow, once again Germany showed why it has been one of the best playing teams of this World Cup. With a nice performance the defending champion of 2002 beat Portugal by 3-1. It was real fun watching the pre-last game just because it was one of the better ones of this World Cup but that would be a different topic. Read more
